Aqua Ohio replacing Sandusky Street water main

Project will replace 2,387 linear feet of main and related infrastructure

TIFFIN, OH Aqua Ohio (Aqua) is replacing the water main along South Sandusky Street from Ella Street to River Road. The new main will increase the size of the pipe serving the area from six to 12 inches in diameter to improve water flow, especially during times of high demand such as firefighting. The project also involves the installation of five new fire hydrants and nine valves that will help isolate portions of the main during future breaks and maintenance.

The work will require lane closures in the area when crews are present, generally between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday throughout the project.

Work is expected to be complete by the middle of October. Motorists in the area are urged to use extra caution over this period and are advised that traffic delays are possible. “The infrastructure being replaced was originally installed before 1940 and has been the source of five main breaks over the past several years,” said Area Manager Scott Ballenger. “This investment will improve reliability and water flows in the area.”

Service interruptions will be necessary, especially as service connections are transferred from the old to the new main. Residents will be notified via door hangers in advance of planned interruptions.

The investment associated with this project will total nearly $750,000. Aqua plans to invest more than $2.5 million this year in the Tiffin system, which serves the City of Tiffin and portions of neighboring townships.

Aqua typically invests between $30 million and $40 million a year in infrastructure among its 38 Ohio water and wastewater systems. In 2019, their plans include $44 million to improve their Ohio systems.
