City of Tiffin awarded $500,000 ODOT grant

Funds to be used to resurface South Washington, West Market streets

TIFFIN, OHIO – Feb. 23, 2022 – The City of Tiffin has entered into an agreement to substantially fund resurfacing projects for South Washington Street and West Market Street with a grant through the Ohio Department of Transportation’s Urban Paving Program. The grant is to provide more than $500,000 toward the project, substantially reducing the City’s portion of the cost.

The City of Tiffin plans to resurface South Washington Street (SR 231) between Sycamore Street and Glenn Street and West Market Street (SR 18) between Elmer Street and South Sandusky Street (SR 53). The project will be designed in 2022 with construction being proposed to begin in June 2023.

ODOT Urban Paving Program provides funds for road projects on state and U.S. routes within municipal corporations. The estimated cost of the project is $726,000, of which $516,000 is to be funded through the grant.

During its meeting Feb. 22, 2022, Tiffin City Council approved legislation to have Tiffin Mayor Aaron Montz enter into the grant agreement.

City Engineer Matt Watson said, “Thank you to the Ohio Department of Transportation for its support of these projects in one of Tiffin’s most heavily trafficked areas. These will go a long way to making sure we can keep our city streets well maintained for the future.”

Tiffin Mayor Aaron Montz commented, “ODOT’s support of the City of Tiffin not only will help improve our infrastructure, but makes sure that these projects can occur without having to take out loans or bonds, putting the costs on future generations. Thank you to Matt Watson and the engineer’s department and Ohio Department of Transportation for making this project a reality.”
