TIFFIN, OH–Aqua announced plans to replace 3,025 linear feet of water main along Melmore Street in Tiffin. The project is expected to get underway the week of July 29 and be completed in early November. Construction will begin at the intersection of Melmore Street and South Washington Street near St. Joseph’s Church and proceed southeast along Melmore to Glenn Street. Drivers and pedestrians are asked to use extra caution while work is underway.
“The water main we’re replacing was installed between 1900 and 1925 and has reached the end of its expected useful life,” said Aqua Ohio’s Area Manager Scott Ballenger. “We collaborated with St. Joseph’s to schedule the work with the least possible disruption to the community. We will start work just after their annual festival and be further down the street before the first day of school.”
Crews will replace the 100-year old cast iron water main with ductile iron which is stronger, and more corrosion resistant. The diameter of the pipe will be increased where appropriate and crews will install five new hydrants for fire protection. Additionally, 22 new valves will be installed along the route to minimize service interruptions during future maintenance or repairs. Short- term service interruptions will be necessary for 45 customers along the route as their service is connected to the new line.
Interruptions will be coordinated with residents. Workers will be active Monday to Friday between the hours of 7:00am and 5:00pm. Melmore will be closed for parking and through traffic in two-block sections while work is conducted in the immediate area. Local traffic will be directed by crews and signage. Final property restorations will be completed in the fall.
Underground Utilities Inc. of Monroeville, OH was selected to construct the project. In addition to this $1.4 million investment, Ballenger said Aqua expects to spend approximately $4.3 million in the Tiffin area this year and more than $65 million across Aqua’s 40 Ohio systems.
