Aqua announced plans to replace 1,590 linear feet of water main along Miami Street in Tiffin. Crews will increase the size of the main from six-inch to eight-inch in diameter and install five new fire hydrants. Additionally, 21 new valves will be installed along the route to minimize service interruptions during future maintenance or repairs. The project will begin on June 10 and be completed in early August. The project area streets will be closed to through traffic but local residents, faculty, staff and students will have access via a single lane controlled by signals and flag crews.

“It is always a challenge to replace infrastructure in heavily traveled areas like this where our main runs between the Gillmor Student center, residence halls and the Pfeiffer Library” said Aqua Ohio’s Area Manager Scott Ballenger. “We scheduled the work in the summer to minimize disruptions to the University.”

Construction will begin at the intersection of Miami Street and Wall Street and proceed east along Miami to South Sandusky Street. Drivers and pedestrians are asked to use extreme caution while work is underway. The zone will include hazards including traffic changes, moving machinery and open trenches. Crews are expected to be active Monday to Friday between the hours of 7:00am and 5:00pm.

Water service for Tiffin University and one home will be interrupted briefly while their services are connected to the new main near the end of the project. Aqua inspectors will work to coordinate the interruption with the university to minimize the impact of the interruption.

Underground Utilities Inc. of Monroeville, OH was selected to construct the project. In addition to this $751,118 investment, Ballenger said Aqua expects to spend approximately $4 million in the Tiffin area this year and more than $65 million across Aqua’s 40 Ohio systems.
