Aqua has announced plans that will replace the 100-year-old water main along the entire length of Madison street in Tiffin. Crews will increase the size of the main from six-inch to eight-inch in diameter and install four new fire hydrants. Additionally, 19 new valves will be installed along the route to minimize service interruptions during future maintenance or repairs. The $720,000 project will begin on May 6 and be completed by the end of June.
“This is an important project to replace six hundred yards of 100 year old water main, but it is in a busy area of town,” said Aqua Ohio’s Area Manager Scott Ballenger. “Our contractor plans to work with Calvert Catholic High School and area businesses to minimize disruptions.”
The project will begin at the intersection of Madison Street and East Front Street and proceed Along the northern side of Madison to Schonhardt Street. Through traffic will be restricted while the project is underway Monday to Thursday between the hours of 7:00am and 5:00pm. The parking spaces and sidewalk on the north side of Madison Street will be closed. Access to adjacent parking lots and most parking on the southern side of the street will be maintained. Drivers and pedestrians entering the work zone should use extra caution and be aware of the workers and construction hazards including traffic changes, moving machinery and open trenches.
The 20 customers receiving new service lines will experience short-term service interruptions while their services are connected to the new main near the end of the project. Those customers will be notified by Aqua in advance of the planned interruptions.
Underground Utilities Inc. of Monroeville, OH was selected to construct the project. In addition to this $416,600 investment, Ballenger said the company expects to spend approximately $4 million in the Tiffin area this year and more than $65 million across Aqua’s 40 Ohio systems.
