Nearly 30 residential streets to be paved

TIFFIN, Ohio – Sept. 3, 2024 – During the Tiffin City Council meeting Tuesday, Mayor Lee Wilkinson sent a request for legislation with the proposed street paving list for 2025. The plan will be considered by City Council for approval at a later meeting.

The base bid includes 27 streets to be resurfaced (Wentz Street will get a maintenance pave only in advance of upcoming sewer work) and has an estimated construction cost of $975,000. The Engineer’s Office proposes opening the projects for bid in November/December.  Construction is expected to begin in the Spring/Summer of 2025.

Funding for the street paving program is possible through the Road and Bridge Levy.

“I want to thank the voters who approved the levy funds, which helps the city to invest more in our road infrastructure,” Wilkinson said. “Thank you also to the City Engineer’s Office for their efforts in planning and designing these vital projects.”

Also, the City of Tiffin will also have an Urban Paving Project in 2025 which will resurface a majority of the city's portion of US 224 south of SR 18. The estimated cost for this project is $617,500, of which the city received a $330,000 federal Urban Paving Grant through Ohio Department of Transportation. Thus, the total proposed resurfacing investment for 2025 is approximately $1,592,500, a significant increase to the $300,000-$400,000 budgeted annually prior to the passage of the levy.

In addition to resurfacing, in 2025, the city also plans to begin a pavement maintenance program utilizing Reclamite asphalt rejuvenator. Reclamite rejuvenator restores the reactive maltene components that asphalt pavements lose due to hot-plant operations and subsequent field aging.  It penetrates the pavement surface deeply to protect against air and water intrusion. At a fraction of the cost of paving, this program will be utilized to prolong the lifespan of Tiffin’s roadways.

In 2025, approximately $60,000 will be invested to apply the product to the following portions of these roadways recently resurfaced in 2023: Ann Street, East Davis Street, Elm Avenue, Fourth Avenue, Greenfield Street, Industrial Avenue, River Road North, Sycamore Street and Westwood Drive.
